Caution : Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing or installing any electrical unit or when a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with exposed electrical terminals. Disconnecting this cable will help prevent personal injury and damage to the vehicle. The ignition must also be in LOCK unless otherwise noted.

Rain sensing Windshield Wiper

Fault Detection

The rain sensor has two levels of fault detection as described below:

Fault A detected

Fault A is indicated when the sensor has detected that the sensor servo operating point is above the expected limits. This is an indication of damage to the windscreen in the area of the coupler or the sensor has been removed from the coupler.

Fault B detected

Fault B is indicated when the sensor has detected that it no longer is responding to rain signals. This is an indication of damage to the windscreen in the area of the coupler or, more likely, that the sensor has detected an electrical failure within the sensor.

Attachment Grade

Attachment grade is used to determine when Fault A is detected. The attachment grade value is set at 140. This allows the product to operate in all conditions other than the most severe damage to the windscreen.

Use sensitivity adjustment to indicate fault

A method to indicate detected faults is available to a service garage technician by using the sensitivity input and the wipers as an indicator. The service method is described as follows:
  1. With ignition on, move the sensitivity adjustment to the high sensitivity setting.
  2. Decrease the sensitivity by one setting.
  3. If a wipe occurs, then 000Fault A has been detected and the service technician should assure that the coupler area on the windscreen is not damaged and the sensor is secured to the coupler.
  4. Decrease the sensitivity one more setting.
  5. If a wipe occurs, than Fault B has been detected and the sensor should be removed and replaced with a known good sensor.

Windshield Wiper ARM

Removal Procedure

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Remove the nut from the wiper arm.
  3. Pull the wiper arm off.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the wiper arm.
  2. Notice : Dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other may corrode rapidly. Make sure to use the correct fasteners to prevent premature corrosion.

  3. Secure the wiper arm with the nut.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the wiper arm nut to 22 N•m (16 lb-ft).

  5. Close the hood.

Windshield Wiper Motor

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the screws and the left side portion of the cowl vent grille.
  3. Remove the nut and the washer that secure the wiper arm linkage to the motor driveshaft.
  4. Pry the wiper arm linkage off the motor driveshaft.

  6. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  7. Remove the bolts and the wiper motor.

Installation Procedure

    Notice : Dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other may corrode rapidly. Make sure to use the correct fasteners to prevent premature corrosion.

  1. Install the wiper motor with the bolts.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the wiper motor bolts to 10 N•m (89 lb-in).

  3. Connect the electrical connector.

  5. Press the wiper arm linkage onto the motor driveshaft.
  6. Install the wiper arm linkage to the motor driveshaft with the washer and the nut.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the wiper arm linkage nut to 8.5 N•m (75 lb-in).

  8. Install the left side portion of the cowl vent grille with the screws.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the cowl vent grille screws to 2.5 N•m (22 lb-in).

  10. Connect the negative battery cable.

Windshield Wiper Blade

Removal Procedure

  1. Rotate the wiper blade on the arm.
  2. While pressing the retainer clip, slide the wiper blade down the wiper arm and remove the blade.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the front right wheel. Refer to Section 2E, Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the front wheel well splash shield. Refer to Section 9R, Body Front End.
  4. Disconnect the washer hose from the washer pump.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  6. Remove the bolts and the reservoir.

Installation Procedure

    Notice : Dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other may corrode rapidly. Make sure to use the correct fasteners to prevent premature corrosion.

  1. Install the reservoir with the bolts.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the washer fluid reservoir bolts to 9 N•m (80 lb-in).

  3. Connect the electrical connector.
  4. Connect the washer hose to the washer pump.
  5. Install the front wheel well splash shield. Refer to Section 9R, Body Front End.
  6. Install the front right wheel. Refer to Section 2E, Tires and Wheels.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

Windshield Washer Pump

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the right front left wheel. Refer to Section 2E, Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the front wheel well splash shield. Refer to Section 9R, Body Front End.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect the washer hose from the washer pump.
  6. Remove the washer pump.

  1. Install the rain sensor to the optocoupler using two snap fit stainless steel clips.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND SYSTEM OPERATION

Windshield Wiper System

The windshield wiper system consists of a wiper motor, a linkage, a wiper arm and a blade, and a wiper/washer switch. The windshield wiper circuit incorporates a selfparking device which consists of a worm gear and a cam plate in order to keep the circuit engaged temporarily when the switch is turned off. The wiper system is driven by a permanent magnet-type motor. The windshield wiper motor is mounted on the dash panel and is directly connected to the windshield wiper linkage.
The windshield wiper motor has two speeds, LO and HI, and also has intermittent wiper capability. The wiper switch is an integral part of the wiper/washer switch. Windshield wiper operation is actuated through the lever on the right side of the steering column.

Windshield Washer System

The windshield washer system is equipped with a washer fluid reservoir, a washer fluid pump, hoses, nozzles, and a wiper/washer switch. The windshield washer reservoir is mounted behind the front left wheel well splash shield. Attached to the reservoir is a washer pump, which pumps fluid through the hoses to the two nozzles mounted on the hood. The washer switch is an integral part of the wiper/washer switch. Windshield washer operation is actuated through the lever on the right side of the steering column.

Rain Sensing Wiper System

The rain sensing wiper system, in addition to providing the normal wiper functions of OFF, MIST, LOW SPEED, HIGH SPEED and WASHER, provides automatic control of DELAY, LOW SPEED, and HIGH SPEED.
The rain sensing wiper system consists of wiper switch, power relay, LOW/HI relay, rain sensor assembly, optocoupler and styling cover.
The power relay and HI/LOW relay are controlled by the rain sensor unit to control the wiper function.
The rain sensor unit is electronic module that uses infrared radiation to determine the level of windshield visibility for the driver, and commands the wiper motor assembly to drive the wipers to maintain a pre-selected level of visibility. The rain sensor module has a P.C. board sub-assembly and a microcomputer that performs the logic functions. A patented non-linear control algorithm resident in the microcomputer interprets the rain-input signal and commands the wiper motor to wipe when appropriate.
The optocoupler is a plastic optical component that couples the infrared radiation emitted from the rain sensor module to the windshield glass. The opticoupler is bonded to the windshield using an adhesive called "Sotefa" at the windshield manufacturer.

Automatic Mode

When the wiper switch is moved to AUTO position and the ignition switch is in the RUN positions, the rain sensor is considered to be in "AUTOMATIC" mode.

Power-up Reminder Wipe:

A single wipe will be performed whenever rain has been detected in the previous 5 minutes and the wiper switch is moved to the AUTO position. If the wiper switch has been left in AUTOMATIC Mode with the vehicle ignition OFF, and then the vehicle ignition switch is turned on, the Rain Sensing Wiper System will perform a single wipe.

Sensitive Adjustment Function:

The drive may adjust the rain sensor performance by adjusting the sensitivity input. When in AUTOMATIC mode, the rain sensor will perform a single wipe each time the SENSITIVITY is adjusted upward to a more sensitive setting. This single wipe will only be performed if rain has been detected in the previous 5 minutes. If the sensitivity adjustment is adjusted upward more than one step, the sensor will only perform a single wipe unless the time between increases is more than 2 seconds.

Automatic Delay

Wipers are to normally remain at "interwipe/park". The rain sensor determines the dwell time appropriate for the amount of precipitation on the windshield after considering the driver input from the switch SENSITIVITY setting. When the dwell time indicates that a wipe is needed, the rain sensor provides input to the wiper motor to activate the wipers to clear the precipitation from the windshield. For all AUTOMATIC DELAY operations the rain sensor commands the wipers to operate in LOW SPEED for one wipe. A single wipe is performed by turning on the speed 1 control circuit for 500 milliseconds.

Automatic Low

AUTOMATIC LOW SPEED operation is utilized when the amount of precipitation impinging on the windshield exceeds the AUTOMATIC DELAY to AUTOMATIC LOW threshold. This threshold includes sufficient hysterisis to prevent cycling between AUTOMATIC DELAY and AUTOMATIC LOW SPEED operation with a steady amount of precipitation accumulation on the windshield.

Automatic High

AUTOMATIC HIGH SPEED operation is utilized when the amount of precipitation impinging on the windshield exceeds the AUTOMATIC LOW to AUTOMATIC HIGH threshold. This threshold includes sufficient hysterisis to prevent cycling between AUTOMATIC LOW and AUTOMATIC HIGH SPEED operation with a steady amount of precipitation accumulation on the windshield.
The rain sensor monitors the wiper switch to determine if the wash function is selected. The rain sensor uses this information to blank or ignore the wash water input to the algorithm. Rain sensor enables the wiper motor to run in low speed during the wash mode and performs the follow up wipers per the following rules:

Manual Mode

The rain sensor determines when a manual mode such as manual low, Mist, Off or manual high is selected. The column switch performs these modes and the rain sensor has no affect.
