SECTION 9S

BODY REAR END

Caution : Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing or installing any electrical unit or when a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with exposed electrical terminals. Disconnecting this cable will help prevent personal injury and damage to the vehicle. The ignition must also be in LOCK unless otherwise noted.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

FUEL FILLER DOOR

The fuel filler door attaches to the fuel tank pocket on the right side of the vehicle. The door is opened by pulling on the fuel filler door remote handle located on the floor in front of the driver's seat.

TAILGATE

The tailgate is made of a steel frame which contains the rear glass. The steel frame is made of an inner and outer panel hemmed around the perimeter and bonded together with structural adhesive. The gas support assemblies assist in the opening of the tailgate and can hold it in the open position.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER

The fire extinguisher is located inside the right side floor deposit box. The fire extinguisher is standard in cars sold in Lebanon and Lybia and is a dealer installed option in Brazil.

FUEL FILLER DOOR

Removal and Installation Procedure

  1. Open the fuel filler door.
  2. Remove the screws.
  3. Installation Notice
    Tightening Torque
    4 N•m (35 lb-ft)
  4. Remove the fuel filler door.
  5. Installation should follow the removal procedure in the reverse order.
  6. Notice : Dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other may corrode rapidly. Make sure to sure to use the correct fasteners to premature corrosion.

TAILGATE

Removal and Installation Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Open and suitably support the tailgate.
  3. Remove the luggage compartment rear trim panel. Refer to Section 9G, Interior Trim.
  4. Remove the C-pillar trim panel. Refer to Section 9G, Interior Trim.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector.

  7. Remove the tailgate lower trim panel. Refer to Section 9G, Interior Trim.
  8. Disconnect the hose nozzle from the tailgate washer.

  10. Remove the gas support assemblies from the tail-gate. Refer to "Gas Support Assemblies" in this section.
  11. With the aid of another technician, remove the bolts and the tailgate from the hinges.
  12. Installation Notice
    Tightening Torque
    20 N•m (15 lb-ft)

    Notice : Dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other may corrode rapidly. Make sure to use the correct fasteners to prevent premature corrosion.

  13. Installation should follow the removal procedure in the reverse order.

GAS SUPPORT ASSEMBLIES

Removal and Installation Procedure

  1. Open and suitably support the tailgate.
  2. Remove the bolt and the gas support assembly from the body.
  3. Installation Notice
    Tightening Torque
    20 N•m (71 lb-in)
    Installation Notice
  4. Remove the bolt and the gas support assembly from the tailgate.
  5. Tightening Torque
    20 N•m (71 lb-in)

    Notice : Dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other may corrode rapidly. Make sure to use the correct fasteners to prevent premature corrosion.

  6. Installation should follow the removal procedure in the reverse order (When the same gas support is used.).
  7. Notice : If the new gas support is used. First ball joint must be mounted and gas support shall be connected to the ball joints.

LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT LOCK

Removal and Installation Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the tailgate lower trim panel. Refer to Section 9G, Interior Trim.
  3. Disconnect the lock rods.
  4. Installation Notice
    Tightening Torque
    6 N•m (53 lb-in)

    Notice : Dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other may corrode rapidly. Make sure to use the correct fasteners to prevent premature corrosion.

  5. Remove the screws.

Removal and Installation Procedure

  1. Open the tailgate.
  2. Remove the bolts.
  3. Installation Notice
    Tightening Torque
    10 N•m (89 lb-in)

    Notice : Dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other may corrode rapidly. Make sure to use the correct fasteners to prevent premature corrosion.

  4. Remove the lock striker
  5. Installation should follow the removal procedure in the reverse order.

Removal and Installation Procedure

  1. Remove the front locker trim panel. Refer to "Section 9G, Interior Trim".
  2. Remove the screw.
  3. Installation Notice
    Tightening Torque
    8 N•m (71 lb-in)

    Notice : Dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other may corrode rapidly. Make sure to use the correct fasteners to prevent premature corrosion.

  4. Disconnect the cable from the handle.
  5. Remove the fuel filler door remote handle.

  8. Remove the rear locker trim panel. Refer to Section 9G, Interior Trim.
  9. Remove the luggage compartment wheelhouse trim panel. Refer to Section 9G, Interior Trim.
  10. Disconnect the cable from the fuel filler door.
