How to rip DVD with wrong region code or deliberate errors from protection.

Also works on correct DVDs.
Disks with any kind of error can take hours to read.
Also works when booted in live environment (ubuntu-24.10 tested).


	Install DDRESCUE

https://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/

or easier

sudo add-apt-repository universe
sudo apt update  
sudo apt install gddrescue

Start VLC Media Player. It is already installed in normal Ubuntu.

Start DVD in VLC (CTRL+D, note drivename fex /dev/sr0).
It can take a minute for VLC to get the key, and start playing.
Play something other than menus.
(If there later are failures, start again and play bits of all of the video(s).)
Pause VLC.

Start Terminal.

Switches are case sensitive!

ddrescue  -u  -r0  -n  /dev/sr0  /MyFolder/My.iso

Switches for non-damaged disk, adjust for scratched disk, but leave -u:
-u = Run all passes in the same direction.
-r0 = Every bad sector is tried only once in each pass.
-n = Skip the scraping phase. Avoids spending a lot of time trying to rescue the most difficult parts of the file.
